How it works

Heavy things don't always have to be hard things

Deep emotional work, done in a way that is light, practical and sometimes funny.

  1. 1

    Name it

Find the exact word on the feelings wheel and notice where it sits in your body.

  2. 2

    Box it

Put it in a box with what happened. Check it against what's true, not just what it feels like.

  3. 3

    Come back to it

Work it when you have the energy. Shelve it, keep the lesson, or let it go.

Real screens from the app

    Catch what just landed

  • A feelings wheel full of words, so you can name it properly.

    Find the exact word

  • Tap where you feel it: chest, jaw, stomach, shoulders.

    Notice it in your body

  • Hit the BAM button as many times as you need.

    Let it out safely

  • Processed boxes become books on your bookshelf, with a cabinet for the good moments.

    Put it on the shelf

  • Done with one for good? The incinerator takes it.

    Let some things go

The 3-minute tour

Watch it before you try it

A walk through a real box, from "Boss snapped at me in front of everyone" to putting it on the shelf.

Why Dave built it

From the inside

I've lived with bipolar type 1 for twenty years, alongside work, business and raising a family. For a long time my feelings ran the show. When I was high I was sure I was right. When I was low everything was heavy.

What helped was simple. Name what I'm feeling. Put it somewhere, instead of carrying it all day. Check it against what is actually true. Come back to it when I've got the energy. And don't do it alone.

Box of feels is that, in your pocket. It's serious when it needs to be and a bit silly when that helps, because heavy things don't always have to be hard things.

Workshops and talks

Box of feels for your school, church or team

Dave runs Box of feels sessions for students, parents, youth groups, staff teams and conferences. Parents learn to stay curious about their child's feelings rather than trying to control them, and to understand their own.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes, while it is in beta. Box of feels is invite only for now. Join the waitlist and Dave will send you a code when there is room.

Who can read my boxes?

Only you. Your entries are locked with your own key before they are saved, so nobody running the app can read them, including Dave. Save your Recovery Key when you sign up, because nobody can reset it.

Is it therapy?

No. Box of feels is a self-help tool. It works well alongside a GP, counsellor or psychiatrist, and can make a simple summary to take to your appointments. It is not a crisis service.

Can my kids use it?

Yes, with you. There is a kid mode, and the focus for families is curiosity, not control. Users need to be 16 or over, or have a parent or carer agree.

What do I need?

An iPhone or Android phone, a tablet or a laptop. It runs in your browser and you can add it to your home screen like an app.
